A guide to Shopify POS (+ FREE demo video)

Shopify API

Interesting in moving to Shopify POS? Whether you’re new to the Shopify platform or already have your ecommerce site set up, here’s the key things you need to know about using the Shopify POS app – including access to a free webinar demonstration from the Shopify team.

What is Shopify POS?

Shopify POS (Point of Sale) is a mobile platform that allows you to sell your products in-person, in-store, or on the go. Through the app, you can process orders, accept payments, offer refunds and print or send receipts, all done from your Android device, iPad or iPhone. With certain Shopify packages, you’ll also get access to a range of Shopify POS hardware – such as receipt printers, barcode scanners and cash drawers.

Which Shopify plan do I need?

Although all Shopify plans include access to the Shopify POS app, not all support selling in brick-and-mortar stores. The more advanced your Shopify package is, the more POS features you’ll have access to – and the more room you’ll have to scale.

Here’s a quick breakdown of which Shopify POS features you can enjoy on each plan:

Shopify Lite: Best for small ecommerce businesses that want to sell in-person at pop-ups, markets and fairs. Features include:

  • Access to Shopify POS software
  • Free card reader
  • 1 staff account

Shopify Basic: Best for small, growing ecommerce businesses that want to sell in-person at pop-ups, markets and fairs. Features include:

  • Access to Shopify POS software
  • Free card reader
  • 2 staff accounts

Shopify: Best for small to medium businesses, looking to sell in at least one physical retail location. Features include:

  • Access to Shopify POS software
  • Access to Shopify POS hardware
  • Free card reader
  • 5 staff accounts
  • Accept gift cards
  • Sell in up to 5 locations

Shopify Advanced: Best for established businesses looking to scale with advanced features and analytics. Features include:

  • Access to Shopify POS software
  • Access to Shopify POS hardware
  • Free card reader
  • 15 staff accounts
  • Accept gift cards
  • Sell in up to 8 locations

Shopify Plus: Best for high-growth enterprises earning over £500,000 a year. Features include:

  • Access to Shopify POS software
  • Access to Shopify POS hardware
  • Free card reader
  • Unlimited staff accounts
  • Accept gift cards
  • Sell in up to 20 locations

Integrating your POS with your Shopify website

Aside from the platform’s ease of use and wide range of features, one of the biggest benefits of using the Shopify POS platform is that you don’t need to integrate it with your Shopify store.

When you add a product to your Shopify store, it’s automatically synced across all your sales channels – including your POS. Unless you set up a rule to exclude the product from your retail store – for example, if it’s an online exclusive – your stock will automatically appear on your POS app.

Not only does this save you from inputting the data multiple times, but it also means all your channels will have up-to-date stock figures – when you make a sale in-store, that’s reflected in your online stock, and vice versa.
